Clinical EEG / Lead programme

Sentinel.

In development

Every signal. In context.

A proposed modular EEG headset and clinical station for intensive care and EEG laboratories.

01 / Design starts with the personModular. Adaptable. Considered.

At the bedside.
Around the person.

Good recording begins with practical questions: access to the scalp, contact stability, comfort and the work of fitting the device.

Sentinel’s proposed modular carrier and interchangeable housings are being developed around those questions.

01

Flexible by intention.

A lightweight carrier with modular sections, allowing the fit and access to be considered around the individual.

02

A choice of contact.

Housing options for differing hair textures, density and styles. Intended recording positions remain part of the fitting plan.

03

Quality made visible.

A workflow that makes contact problems and missing coverage visible, so they can be checked and documented.

Inclusive design research

Scalp access without cutting hair.

Our housing proposal includes options for Afro-textured, tightly curled, coily and dense hair. Equivalent clinical performance and prolonged wear still need to be established.

Inspect the recording and document findings and limitations. Submit an interpretation, communicate it to the treating team and record receipt. The treating team records its clinical decision separately.

Review and clinical follow-up remain open until explicitly documented.

Programme details & technical context

Lead programme · In development

Intended users
EEG technologists, neurophysiology specialists and bedside teams.
Initial setting
Intensive care and EEG laboratories.
Next question to test
Evaluate recording quality, fitting, prolonged wear and the workflow on the intended hardware.

The headset and clinical system are in development. A working DOWS demonstration explores the proposed workflow with fictional patients; it does not establish device performance.

One recording, with its clinical context.

Sentinel is being designed to bring electroencephalography (EEG) recordings, marked events, clinician annotations and patient context into one workspace. The aim is to support a clear path from bedside setup to specialist review, handover and export.

Our focus is the practical work around a recording: establishing scalp contact, making signal problems visible, keeping responsibilities clear and helping clinicians navigate the evidence. These are development goals, rather than claims of proven clinical benefit.

See the workflow illustrations above, or explore the interactive demo through DOWS.

The proposed headset and station

Modular scalp contact

A modular carrier and interchangeable electrode housings are being explored to support individual fitting and bedside access. Maintaining the intended recording coverage, comfort and contact stability are validation priorities.

EEG review

The proposed station brings raw EEG, event markers and notes together. Our interactive demo explores full-screen review, time and amplitude measurements and clearly labelled recording context.

Ward overview

A separate overview explores how teams could see multiple beds, pending reviews, responsibility and data freshness. Remote viewing in the demo is a simulated workflow, not a deployed patient-monitoring service.

A workflow from setup to discharge

  1. Prepare and fit. Confirm the recording context, assess scalp access and check each required contact.
  2. Monitor and check signal quality. Keep recording faults visible and distinguish technical problems from events needing review.
  3. Review and document. Inspect the EEG and record the reviewer’s interpretation. A simulated event flag is not a diagnosis.
  4. Handover responsibility. Make outstanding work and the accepting team member explicit.
  5. Finish and export. Review the episode, export its record and verify that the exported information can be reopened.

This sequence is demonstrated in DOWS. Its use with real patients, staff and equipment would require further engineering, usability evaluation and clinical validation.

EEG fitting across hair textures

Sentinel’s design work includes scalp-access housings for Afro-textured, tightly curled, coily and dense hair. Proposed options include an open-sided, clip-style housing and an optional braid-compatible adapter. The intention is to provide access to required scalp sites without cutting or shaving hair.

Equivalent clinical performance across hair textures has not been established for Sentinel. Contact stability, recording quality, comfort and multi-day use remain questions to test.

Explore the workflow through DOWS

DOWS stands for Demos, Overviews, Walkthroughs and Scenarios. It provides a protected space to explore fitting, fictional ICU episodes, team handovers, technical faults and exports. A separate EEG library labels its historical research recording and source.

DOWS supports exploration and practice. Completion does not certify clinical competence, and the emulator is not a device for patient care.

Development status

Sentinel is in development. Hardware performance, clinical effectiveness, long-duration wear and regulatory requirements remain to be demonstrated or addressed. The concepts shown here do not represent a clinically validated or cleared medical device.

Questions about Sentinel

Can I buy Sentinel or use it with patients?

This website presents a development programme and a demonstration environment. Sentinel is not being offered here as a device for clinical use.

Does the demo prove seizure-detection accuracy?

No. Simulated scenarios demonstrate an intended workflow. They do not establish seizure sensitivity, false-alarm rates or clinical performance.

How can clinicians or researchers contribute?

We welcome conversations about EEG setup, review, handover, ward usability and research collaboration. Contact Phanes with your role, setting and the problem you would like to discuss.
